FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies collaborated with Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) on a mangrove restoration program that will rehabilitate 10 hectares of mangrove area in Bengkalis, Riau Province.
As part of its FedEx Cares global community engagement program, 30 FedEx volunteers teamed-up to plant 70 mangrove trees at the Mangrove Tourism Centre in North Jakarta on Earth Day. The activity is also part of April Global Volunteer Month where FedEx team members are encouraged to come together to ‘Drive Forward. Give Back’ by volunteering and doing countless acts of caring.
“Committing to Do Good is an important culture value. At FedEx, we empower our team members to positively impact our local communities through efforts like this to promote sustainability,” said Garrick Thompson, managing director of FedEx Express Indonesia. “At FedEx, fostering a strong spirit of volunteerism among our team membersis part of our DNA. It contributes to making FedEx a great place to work, and we are proud of our team members for volunteering their time to create a brighter and more sustainable future for generations to come.”“Apart from maintaining temperature balance due to climate change, mangroves can also improve the ecological quality in Jakarta,” said Dirja Kusumah, head of the Forestry Division of The Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Agency.
Current studies suggest that mangroves and coastal wetlands can capture carbon from the atmosphere at tentimes the annual rate of mature tropical forests1. Indonesia has the largest mangrove forest area in the world2, this vast area represents 20 percent of the world’s mangroves3. The thriving presence of healthy mangroves in littoral areas iscrucial as it enhances the resilience of coastal communities against climate change and reduces the impact of natural disasters such as tsunamis, storms, and sea waves.
