“Apart from maintaining temperature balance due to climate change, mangroves can also improve the ecological quality in Jakarta,” said Dirja Kusumah, head of the Forestry Division of The Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Agency.
Current studies suggest that mangroves and coastal wetlands can capture carbon from the atmosphere at tentimes the annual rate of mature tropical forests1. Indonesia has the largest mangrove forest area in the world2, this vast area represents 20 percent of the world’s mangroves3. The thriving presence of healthy mangroves in littoral areas iscrucial as it enhances the resilience of coastal communities against climate change and reduces the impact of natural disasters such as tsunamis, storms, and sea waves.
“YKAN has actively collaborated with the Government of Indonesia to develop an integrated strategy for mangrove restoration, which has been implemented in provinces such as DKI Jakarta, Central Java, Riau, South Sumatra and East Kalimantan,” shared Pricilla Christin, Communications Director at YKAN. She expressed her gratitude for FedEx continued support for YKAN’s mangrove conservation efforts since 2022.
FedEx aims to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040 and advance its environmental objectives through innovation, research, and empowering communities to act sustainably.
